First Odin sub-mm cloud ice retrieval
نویسندگان
چکیده
There exists today no established satellite technique for measuring the amount of ice in thicker clouds. Sub-mm radiometry is a promising technique for the task, and a retrieval scheme for the first such instrument in space, Odin-SMR, is presented. Several advantages of sub-mm observations are confirmed, such as low influence of parti-5 cle shape and orientation, and a high dynamic range of the retrievals. In the case of Odin-SMR, cloud ice amounts above ∼12.5 km can be determined. The presented retrieval scheme gives a detection threshold of ∼4 g/m 2 without saturation even for thickest observed clouds. The main retrieval uncertainty is the assumed particle size distribution. Initial results are found to be consistent with similar Aura MLS retrievals. It 10 is then shown that important differences compared to atmospheric models exist. This first retrieval algorithm is limited to lowermost Odin-SMR tangent altitudes, and further development should improve the detection threshold and the vertical resolution.

More accurate global measurements of the amount of ice in thicker clouds are needed to validate atmospheric models and sub-mm radiometry can be an important component in this respect. A cloud ice retrieval scheme for the first such instrument in space, Odin-SMR, is presented here. متن کاملFirst Odin sub-mm retrievals in the tropical upper troposphere: humidity and cloud ice signals
Odin-SMR is a limb-sounder operating in the 500 GHz region with the capability of performing measurements down to altitudes of about 10 km with relatively low influence of ice clouds. Until now spectra from tropospheric tangent altitudes have been disregarded due to inadequate handling of scattering. A first method to extract upper tropospheric quantities has now been developed, yielding the hu...

Within the last decade, a number of satellite sub-mm limb sounding missions has been developed with Odin/SMR[10] and EOSMLS[17]among them now operating successfully for several years. While focused on measuring atmospheric trace gase profiles, frequent observations of upper tropospheric ice clouds by these instruments are expected according to previous studies[3] [5]and have recently been demon...
متن کاملComparison between early Odin-SMR, Aura MLS and CloudSat retrievals of cloud ice mass in the upper tropical troposphere
Emerging microwave satellite techniques are expected to provide improved global measurements of cloud ice mass. CloudSat, Aura MLS and Odin-SMR fall into this category and early cloud ice retrievals from these instruments are compared. The comparison follows the SMR retrieval product and is made for partial ice water columns above 12 km. None of the retrievals shows a significant degree of fals...
